hantsbear: (3D Me!)
An opening number in the style of Bob Fosse, but with luminous Marigold gloves.
Wobbly sets.
Even wobblier acting.
A lost evil triplet sister.
Macaroons.
Haemorroids.

It can only be Acorn Antiques - The Musical!

Laughed me socks off, I did. The beauty of the production is it doesn't need Victoria Wood, Julie Walters, Celia Imrie and Duncan Preston to reprise their roles from the TV; a strong cast and script kept a packed house amused.

A certain ginger-furred, fierce eyebrowed individual has got a birthday today...

Happy Birthday, [Bad username or unknown identity: rock_bear!!](hugs, nuzzles and growlings!)

London on a Saturday morning doesn't put me in the best of moods; add to that half the tube lines being out of order and the population becomes a seething mass of brainless imbeciles.  And my unpleasant side comes to the fore with people being pushed past, glared at and being sworn at for the plague of imbeciles that they are.  Thank heavens, therefore, for [livejournal.com profile] rock_bear and chocolate.

Managed to get to see The Lunatic Queen last night.  Enjoyed it thoroughly.  Apparently, though, it's had some bad reviews, which I found difficult to believe.  Utimately, whilst based on events in fifteenth century Spain, there are parallels with today; namely people being persecuted by the Church in the name of God; in the play, it's Jews and Moors - as for today... draw your own conclusions.

To XXL last night, to be introduced to an Irish bear called Stephen, who I've been talking to on Bear411; much watching of fur, staggered back to hotel in Earls Court about half one-ish.  Not sure what time Russ staggered back, but there was a warm, furry presence in my bed by the time I woke up...

Spent this afternoon drinking hot chocolate in a cafe on Old Compton Street, watching the bears go by.  And, cue Andy Williams... "The bears watch the bears, who watch the bears who watch the cubs go by...!"

Spent yesterday ushering at the New Theatre Royal's production of "The Firebird" - not the ballet, but an alternative to pantomime performed by a company of 6 (including one very cute wolf) based on the Russian folk tale.  If you're in the area (wait... most of my friend list is based in the USA - none of 'em are just going to "drop in" at a moment's notice...!) it's well worth seeing; simply produced with no set changes and a folk/cajun music score.

Anyways, went into the nearest Subway, and was disappointed; no choice of bread.  Just white, white or white.  I'm sure the Subway's I've been to in the US have had a choice of bread... oh well, just have to hope Quizno's opens down here soon - they already have them in Birmingham...

Urf.

Was in London for most of the weekend with Russ; we took a walk along the South Bank and we passed the memorial to David Morley, the bear killed in a homophobic attack last weekend .  A lot of the time, we were walking blazenly hand-in-hand.  It was, to my mind, the best gesture of defiance to the bastards.

We also went to see a play in Greenwich, which I had seen a couple of weeks before.  Stood in the bar after the show, the actors troop in for post show drinks and schmoozing.  Trust Russ to look at one of the actors (admittedly one of the cute, furry ones) and utter the line "You know, I'm sure I've had my tongue up his ar*e...!"

And then there was Karaoke at the King's Arms last night.  They announced that the vigil in memory of David Morley had raised well in excess of £3000 for charity.   And a certain hairy individual (whose name is not Russ) was persuaded to get up and sing "Mamma Mia".  Complete with appalling swedish accent...

So... up in The Smoke over the weekend. Checked into hotel, showered and out to the Kings Arms, for BearHug meet. Not many there; damned humid too, so 'Suddenly, all my clothes fell off...!!!' Well, almost. Spent the evening chatting to someone whose name I have completely forgotten. Oh well.

Russ [livejournal.com profile] rock_bear arrived at the hotel around nine on Saturday morning; had a little breakfast and headed down to Putney to view potential flat. The guy seemed quite pushy to move, and, even though it was a reasonable size for a one bed flat, somehow I can't see all of Russ's stuff fitting in there. Plus, it was a very warm flat, and I know how Russ reacts to high temperatures. That done, we wandered across Wimbledon Common, as Russ mused the pros and cons of potential abode. Headed back into London and managed to find some decent black fishnet material to make [livejournal.com profile] darklogic_xl5's new piece of finery. Back to hotel for shower, then back to Old Compton Street to Mr. Wu's for a spot of dinner before the performance of 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang'. It was fun. By which I mean that I was cheering, hissing, gasping and booing with the best of 'em. Afterwards, to the Kings Arms for another drink - bumped into Little Mo, who I should have contacted the previous night to meet up - ah well... memory not what it was...! Thence, XXL for fur watching amongst other things. Got back to the hotel about 2.30 am - Russ staggered back about 4.45 am, the little stop-out!

Sunday, and after breakfast and showering, off to the Natural History Museum for a behind the scenes tour of the labs and preserved specimens. I'm afraid wearing a labcoat brought back too many memories of labs at Polytechnic for me... Quick run round the Science Museum, followed by lunch in a Polish restaurant, which felt very much like the Berlin Wall had never fallen - the food was "interesting" by which I mean not awful, but neither does Warsaw figure very highly on my travelling plans in the forseeable future...!!! Then, a walk along the Embankment and the train back to Portsmouth, during which journey some snivelling b@$t@rd stole my CD player while I was distracted at the trolley. Grrr.

Thus endeth the weekend...

And So...

Back to reality.

Via Portland OR, the Columbia River Valley (and a whole lot of gorgeous waterfalls - hmm, there may be a pun in there somehere,) Maryhill Museum and a replica of Stonehenge...

Taking in The Puppetry of the Penis; What the (bleep) Do We Know and Jersey Girl...

Tried unsuccessfully to call [livejournal.com profile] albadger and managed to successfully call [livejournal.com profile] denbear and [livejournal.com profile] benpanced.

And ate our way through most of the Asian sub-continent.

Oh, and got another Business Class upgrade. (Ducks tirade of abuse from [livejournal.com profile] longhairelric...)

Went to see "The Mousetrap" last night, supposedly the longest running stage production in the world. I'm glad I went; I enjoyed it, even though I had a vague suspicion somebody had told me who did it some years ago. However that did not detract from the enjoyment.

Met up with a slightly inebriated Mo at the Kings Arms. It doesn't take that much beer to make him tiddly being but a frail little thing, and I think he'd been there since 4 o'clock; it was about 8 by the time I got there...

Stayed in a hotel in the East End of London. The East End has changed enormously since my abortive attempt at a college diploma 19 years ago - when I lived there for a year, it comprised of lots of dingy rail yards; decaying docks and social housing by the acre. Now, thanks to the Docklands becoming London's second financial district, a lot of regeneration has taken place with lots of obscenely priced apartments being thrown up all over.

It's still grotty, though.

So, [livejournal.com profile] albadger is safely ensconsed back in California and [livejournal.com profile] rock_bear trudges his weary way back to Nottingham. And I'm getting over the stinking migraine I had this morning.

Rewind.

Thursday - Al successfully negotiated the mysteries of the Gosport Ferry and made his way to the bus station, where I met him about a half hour later. Spent the evening at mi casa eating fish and chips and watching diverse DVDs.

Friday - Took Al to Lewes, and wandered the second hand bookshops, finding a "suitable" gift for [livejournal.com profile] progbear in the process. Was prodded in the stomach by my beloved aunt along with the question "Have you had your BMI checked lately??" Ah, the joys of relatives in the medical professions...!!!

Saturday - Leisurely porridge breakfast and then up to London to meet up with Russ. Went to Foyles bookshop and picked up a small present for Russ's impending anniversaire, thence dinner and "Jerry Springer - The Opera". Loved the first act; alas, as mentioned in Russ's journal, the performance was cancelled during the second act. So now all three of us are on tenterhooks...

Sunday - Saw Al off at Paddington for his train to the airport, and then over to Earl's Court to meet Russ. Wandered around the street markets around Shoreditch - nearly picked up a used dentist's chair - a snip at only £300!!! Thence up to Highgate and a very damp koala and bear arriving at the cemetary, wandering around the graves. Although, at one point on the walk to the cemetary, there was an utterly fantastic view of the City of London silhouetted, surrounded by fog. Back into the centre of London and drinks at the Kings Arms. And then home again.
hantsbear: (its like this...)
You'll catch your death of cold dressed like that.

This began with a YIM message session with Russ in the week - he'd managed to get two free tickets to see the National Theatre's production of "Vincent in Brixton" at the Playhouse theatre - a quaint little theatre underneath Charing Cross station. Admittedly, it wasn't the sort of thing I would have thought of going to see, but I enjoyed it. Some of the situations striking a chord with me...

Afterwards, I was persuaded (yeah, right!) to go to XXL, a bear/chunkie club in South London. It was okay I guess, there were only 4 longhairs around including Russ and myself, and the music was typically "buftah... buftah... buftah..." but it was kinda relaxed and furry. I staggered into a taxi around 1am and ended up at my hotel about 2am, because the taxi driver got hideously lost... oh well...
hantsbear: (wild hair)
I don't know where I'm going. This fact has started to bug me of late - I keep having this horrible vision of being sat at the same desk in 10 years time in the same house in the same town in the same mess...
