hantsbear: (I want to speak to my agent...)

Crappy mood for about 50% of the morning at work today.  I'm not sure whether it had anything to do with the fact that I'd been chatting to Clifford on line first thing*, which had me thinking about what I don't have while I was walking into the city to catch the tram out to work.  I am currently pestering several agencies to get me a permanent position - one job I had high hopes of getting an interview for, I was turned down for because I "had too much experience for such a junior position".  Well, pardon me for breathing.  Surely the fact that I have been doing a menial (albeit temp) job for 6 months nearly should be some sort of indication that I'm prepared to put up with a basic clerical job.

What employers seem to be unaware of is that I can't get a job in the IT industry because of my lack of hardware experience; all of my software/language experience is in virtually extinct languages.  And it's been so long now since I used them that I would have difficulty getting back into that type of mindset.

So, I end up being frustrated which makes me even more determined to keep trying.  It's all I can do.  Doing nothing is not an option.

*we did not have an argument or anything; just my continual sense of loss.

Lose them from your CV.

Be intentionally vague - it's not lying although you can stretch a few dates.

You'd be not alone, and farther enough back then people won't question it. Make something up, say you were freelancing or working abroad, but nothing too racy otherwise they will ask. You can be sketchy about over a few years back and they will only ask for clarification, make it good and they won't check.

They're only really interested in recent work history, 3-5 years usually. Make that relevant and the rest boring yet solid.

If you can do the job and know you can do it, then brushing over past stuff that tends to distract is OK, it's not lying. Just be vague about it. If they push about it then you can say.

One of us may already have mentioned this, or maybe it's not something you'd be interested in due to the distance, but we generally have some decent openings in London. The postings are at http://www.rackspace.co.uk/recruitment/find_a_job

It's a great company for learning and growth, so if you took something entry-level I'm sure you could move on to more interesting things quickly.

Thanks - Alex did put some feelers out for me last year the first time he went to Stockley Park; alas, at the time the salary at entry level was not enough to cover me at that time. In time, it may well be; I have things scary yet to sort out, but we shall see...
