The hoo-hah has started. St. George's crosses displayed everywhere, and wall to wall 24 hours a day eat sleep drink football. Because as we all know, EVERYBODY in the British Isles loves, nay adores, worships even the almighty Soccer.

Except me. And possibly a few others (I'm looking for moral support here, Nottingham...!) I am quite looking forward to the inevitable period of national mourning/demands for the scalps of Sven Goran Eriksson and David Beckham, when England drop ingloriously out of the tournament.

I can dream, can't I?

It's more the schadenfreude of the wailing and gnashing of teeth when the inevitable English defeat happens that amuses me. Why can't we just accept that we're good at inventing games, but crap at playing them...?

when i was younger, father signed me up to be on the local community soccer/football/black-and-white-sphere-kicking-game kids' team. i didn't want to do it, but he bought me all of the equipment and drove me to practice and games.

i sucked, but thought i was doing okay. when he told me i sucked, well, i wasn't surprised....after all, i didn't even know the rules of the goddamned game!

in fact, i still don't...
