I think that pretty much sums the way certainly the UK has gone and, I would venture to suggest, the USA has gone.  Nobody sees the bigger picture.  Nobody looks to the longer term.  "We want a better NHS, but you want to put up taxes to do it?  Over my dead body!"  "We need more social housing, but my Council Tax bill will go up?  On yer bike!"

As a result, here we are in Brexit mode and the USA apparently heading happily towards a Christian theocracy.  And now people are starting to realise the cost.  Pound drops massively against the dollar and the euro.  Prices going up.  True, the "promised" downturn in the economy hasn't happened.  Yet.

What amazed me the most about the Brexit vote was the fact that areas that have benefited from significant amounts of money from the EU decided to vote to leave, such as the Welsh valleys.

Lemmings.

Trump has said that it should be America First and everybody else second. I've know from some time that the Brexit Supporters and the Trump supporters were cut from ther same cloth. And all have been convinced to vote against there best interest. One author said that the Republicans are trying to repeal the 20th century. It is going to be a harsh lesson. We can either stay and fight or leave them to it and find a safe haven.

I've said for a long time that for me Canada is too close. The US could invade Canada and change it. My joke is that I am going to move to Vanuatu. Doesn't "Van of Vanuatu" have a nice ring.

The reality is that I'm too old to move and all it would do is make me feel more isolated. Do you have a spare bedroom? ;-{p}}}}}}}}}}}

It may be the year 2017, but politicians seem determined to make it be the year 1017 again.

Pretty much. My one-line summation of November's election is "We had a nationwide referendum on empathy and empathy lost." Democracy doesn't work when you can't imagine yourself in your fellow citizens' shoes and don't see why you should even try to.
