Hell In A Handcart.

I am at a loss.  I just don't get it.  And I certainly want 2016 to be over.  What has happened to the UK and the US?  I certainly don't understand my own country any more and as for trying to understand our larger neighbour to the west, which I thought I was starting to...

The Trump talks of reconcilliation, whilst appointing a whole stream of right wing nutjobs into seemingly powerful positions, and pouting and posturing when someone has the audacity to call his running mate on his ultra white christian, gay hating beliefs.  I thought it was done with love and respect but the perma-tanned ferret thinks otherwise.

I hear conflicting stories as to what the new administration can/can't to to the hard fought LGBT* rights brought in by President Obama.  Could the USA even go as far as some Middle Eastern countries and introduce a gay test at the borders?  Yes, it sounds ridiculous but frankly, I wouldn't put it past someone like Mike Pence.

I just don't know what to think any more.

The US system is constructed in a way which makes it difficult to make sweeping changes even when one party controls all branches of government. That's been a major source of frustration over the years, but now it works in our favour. Any substantial changes to settled law would spark legal challenges and those could take years to make their way through the courts.

It isn't great that the highest of those courts will soon be stacked with conservative judges, but keep in mind that in the US "conservative" often means "favours limited government". So it's not a given that they'll approve any substantial enlargement of executive powers.

So a gay ban isn't impossible, but it's extremely unlikely. You may have more to worry about badly-written anti-immigrant legislation which ends up having unintended consequences for tourists and other foreign nationals who want to come here.

Although I gave up on going to America after the security theatre became belts, shoes, laptops out of bags, liquids, Googling (yes really) and the rest. And as a result spent hours in a queue in SFO.

It just got really silly, and I thought that one of these times I'd be refused since I've been critical of the States and such security theatre.
