Vocalisation...
May. 27th, 2006 06:40 amI have a strange habit. I pick up accents very easily. When I visit the US, it doesn't take long before I have lost my British acccent to some sort of American melange - although, I tend to regionalise; I was once thought of as being "an educated southerner" by someone I met in Alabama. And, on the last trip, when I called Russ from Minneapolis, he commented on how less Utah I sounded. It's not just restricted to the USA - cross the border into Scotland, and I turn into Rob Roy. Wales - it's all Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, boyo. Ireland, and I turn into Terry Wogan. The strange thing is, I can't quite manage Canadian. This despite the fact that it seems to be somewhat Scottish based. And yet back home, nobody thinks I have an acccent, which is odd, because I'd considered myself to have an accent roughly between Birmingham and Manchester. True, while I was growing up, I unconciously resisted the Wiltshire burr (Oooo arrrr me deario!)
Accents facinate me; I wish I'd done some form of lingustics at University; maybe a thesis into the effect of the various British accents on the development of the American accents. Maybe one day...
