Fortunately you don't have to actually talk to the Mormons anymore, now that it is all online at www.familysearch.org. It's highly recommended that anything you find from them be confirmed, though. Their data has more than a few booboos in it, and farther back it starts to reflect more mythology than history (Adam and Eve are in it). I have also found them most useful for the 18th-19th Centuries; 20th Century records are not so extensive.
Good luck! It took me forever to break through that late 19th/early 20th century roadblock on my paternal line, but once I did it was smooth sailing back to 16th century Yorkshire.
